Papers, 1898-1961, 1911-1949 (bulk)

Papers of Edwin C. Hoyt relating to the operation of his farm, primarily growing apples, peaches, and other orchard crops, with some livestock and general truck farming. Diaries, 1911-1928, 1942-1945 and 1947-1949, note weather conditions, crop spraying schedules, farm workers and their chores, and other farming topics. Notebooks and account books, 1911-1930, contain records of apple and peach crops, with accounts of sales; cash accounts with laborers; bank books; and extensive notes and observations on such topics as pruning, spraying, fertilizing, harvesting, cover crops, soil chemistry, frosts, crop diseases, horse vs. tractor, old vs. new crop varieties, management of labor, and notes on pigs, pickles, potatoes, corn, carrots, vegetables, rye, hay, and manure. Letter copybooks, 67 volumes, 1911-1949, contain carbon copies of business letters on every aspect of the farm business. There are orders for supplies and equipment, letters to banks, letters with employees about wages and hours worked, and letters to farmers, suppliers, and government agricultural stations around the country requesting information or advice, largely about orchard crops, but covering many other farming topics as well. A few letters to local town officials concern hours spent by himself and his employees fighting fires in the area.
